I know it seems a little late to be wishing you a Happy 2021....and I know I have already wished this to many of you already....however I feel I have to take every opportunity to wish you all a "happier 2021..!"

Last week really was one of two halves, the week started really smoothly. I know that the children at home were all working extremely hard with their home learning and the children in school were really getting into the swing of things too.

Then the snow fell !!! This didn't  stop St Joseph's one bit....

Even though staff had to abandon cars and trek home on foot ...our children were still cared for and still educated .

I would like to thank all of our incredible staff, who daily go over and above to provide excellent opportunities for our children....I would like to thank all of our wonderful children, who even with the temptation of snow fun (which I am sure they enjoyed..!) still completed their daily tasks ! Finally and very importantly, I would like to thank all of our parents who every day do such a fantastic job in supporting the children with their online learning.I know sometimes this isn't easy, but by working together we are making sure that our children continue to do well and develop.

COVID-19 Update

With the start  of  the Spring Term under our belts we are glad to have been able to settle relatively smoothly into a new routine, offering in-school provision for our vulnerable children and those from our critical worker families whilst providing comprehensive online remote teaching to all our pupils at home. We have been able to reach this point thanks to the amazing  efforts of staff in preparing and improving our systems whilst adapting to ever-changing circumstances.

What is clear , however, is that the number of pupils eligible to attend school under the critical worker provision is much higher than during the first lockdown. We therefore need to ensure that we can accommodate those most in need whilst recognising that we must continue to do everything that we can to keep staff and pupils as safe as possible in school in light of recent Coronavirus developments.

As I am sure you will understand, running a dual system of educating and supervising children in school whilst providing remote learning to those children at home places an additional logistical staffing burden on the school as teachers are deployed to online teaching whilst staff are still required in the classrooms for those being educated in school. The extremely rapid rate of transmission of the virus at the moment means that we must do everything we can to protect our school community: pupils, parents and staff alike.

The recently updated guidance from the Department for Education has reiterated  that whilst children with at least one parent or carer who is a critical worker can go to school if required, parents and carers who are critical workers should keep their children at home if they can.

Please note the revised risk assessment, is now on the website for your information.

Free School Meals

As you may be aware there is much still in the media, in terms of Free School Meals . The Governments preference is for the children to receive food hampers and grab bags , however Sheffield Local Authority would much prefer it if there were some sort of voucher system in place. We have yet to receive details on how this shall work - as soon as we have this information we shall be in touch with further details.

From 1-7 February 2021, we’re taking part in Place2Be’s Children’s Mental Health Week. This year’s theme is Express Yourself.

Place2Be has created activities and resources to help children (and adults) to explore the different ways that they can share their thoughts, feelings and ideas. There are lots of resources on the Children’s Mental Health Week website that you can use with your child at home; including activity ideas, tips for parents and carers, and an online assembly which will be available from Monday 1 February.

Visit childrensmentalhealthweek.org.uk  to find out more.

We would love to see photographs of any of the activities that you get involved with.

We are looking forward to the end of the month, when we shall be welcoming Mrs Wilson back from her maternity leave. Mrs Wilson will be joining Mrs Dungworth in Y3 . Mrs Harrand will of course continue to support the class, especially during this challenging time.
