The Tradition of Advent

Advent is the period of four Sundays and weeks before Christmas (or sometimes from the 1st December to Christmas Day!). Advent means 'Coming' in Latin. This is the coming of Jesus into the world. Christians use the four Sundays and weeks of Advent to prepare and remember the real meaning of Christmas.

There are three meanings of 'coming' that Christians describe in Advent. The first, and most thought of, happened about 2000 years ago when Jesus came into the world as a baby to live as a man and die for us. The second can happen now as Jesus wants to come into our lives now. And the third will happen in the future when Jesus comes back to the world as King and Judge, not a baby.

This Sunday, is the first Sunday of Advent. In school we have started our preparations by each class making an Advent Wreath. These were blessed by Fr Mark today in a special liturgy, led by our Liturgy Leaders.

On Monday, Mrs Drumfrey, from Mission Together, came to St Josephs and led a special assembly.

Mission Together is the Catholic Church’s official children’s charity for overseas mission. It is the children’s branch of Missio.

The children have all been given a little red box to take home. Please fill this with any spare change that you may have. Mrs Dumfrey will be returning after Christmas, to collect the boxes and send your donations to children who are in need.

Last week we said goodbye to Mr Barnsley, in a special assembly.

It was very emotional, but gave us as a school family, the opportunity to thank him for everything that he has done for us.

Many children took part in Mr Barnsleys raffle, which raised £   towards our donation for the Childrens Hospital.

We shall soon be welcoming our new caretaker, Mr Exley, into St Josephs family.
