St Peter and St Paul

On June 29th, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of Saint Peter & Saint Paul. These two saints were contemporaries. Peter was a disciple of Jesus and chosen by Christ to lead the Church. Paul had been a zealous Jew who persecuted Christians, before experiencing a dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus and becoming the Church’s first great missionary. Through their preaching, ministry and martyrdom, saints Peter and Paul helped to establish Christ’s global Church family. The feast of saint Peter and Saint Paul is a solemnity, the highest rank for a liturgical feast, and a holy day of obligation.

 Wellbeing Week

Wellbeing Week is a week to provide young people with knowledge, skills and tools to manage their own mental health and wellbeing. World Wellbeing Week is held each year in the last week of June. This week has been an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of looking after our mental health and wellbeing. Studies have shown that spending time outdoors and in nature each week is associated with good mental and physical health and wellbeing. With the lovely weather this week, the children have really enjoyed having time outside in our beautiful grounds.

Y6 visited SADACCA (Sheffield And District African Caribbean Community Association) to work with the Sheffield Food Heritage Trust to learn about food and how it has developed within our City. Mr Rob Cotterell who is the chair of SADACCA was chief chef for the day and he taught the children how to make some Caribbean pies from recipes which have been kept alive by families passing on their special family recipes throughout the years.

On Wednesday we held our sports day and it was a huge success. Reception and KS1 had a brilliant morning competing on the field and then in the afternoon we held the KS2 Sports Day. The children were put into their house teams and then completed a carousel of activities alongside their team trying to earn as many points as possible.

For Reception and KS1 there were six activity stations altogether including a rest station. The activities were: bean bags and hoops, penalty shoot out, bean bag throw, relay races, standing long jump and drinks/rest station

Thankyou to all the parents who were able to come along and cheer on the children.

Transition Day – Wednesday 3rd July 2024

On Wednesday 3rd July, the children in Reception to Y5, will have a transition day to get to know their new staff, new classrooms and also start to make preparations for their next school year.

The children shall spend time finding out information about their class saint and prepare some artwork for their new classroom. They shall also spend some time reminding themselves of school expectations in terms of behaviour and learning. As you know we follow a positive behaviour policy where each class works towards different rewards. The children shall spend time on Wednesday deciding on possible rewards for their new school year.

I am sure that all of the children will have lots of fun and will have much to tell you when they get home!

With kindest regards,

Mrs McFarlane

There are 190 days in a school year

Your legal responsibility

If your child does not attend school regularly (over 90%) the Local Authority can take action against you. This can be through a Fixed Penalty Notice (fine) or a summons to appear at Magistrates' Court.

What is a Fixed Penalty Notice?

The Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003 introduced legislation for Local Authorities to issue Fixed Penalty Notice fines to parents/carers of pupils who have unauthorised absences from school.

A Penalty Notice fine can be issued for two reasons: -

  • If a holiday is taken during term time without permission from the headteacher

  • If a pupil has unauthorised absence from school and their parent/carer fails to cooperate with school staff and other professionals to improve the situation

What are the fines?

£120 per parent/carer reduced to £60 if paid within 21 days. If the £120 is not paid within 28 days a summons can be issued to appear in Magistrates' Court. The Local Authority can decide whether to issue a summons to Magistrates' Court instead of a Penalty Notice fine.

Weekly Attendance - week beginning 24th June 2024

Our whole school attendance target for this academic year (23/24) is 96.5%

A 2023 report from the Gambling Commission found that 40% of 11–to 17-year-olds had some experience of gambling in the preceding 12 months 🎰 That’s a significant number of children and young people involved in an over 18s activity 🔞 Engagement and exposure to gambling can impact one's finances, mental health and wellbeing. It is crucial we are all aware of the risks and know how to protect and support our children.

It is quite challenging to protect our children against exposure to gambling at any time, but especially around major sport events like Euro 2024 ⚽ This week’s  guide tackles the most prominent risks that gambling poses to young people, and explains how best to protect against them.

Online gambling has become more prevalent over the years, with such practises widely advertised on social media and even incorporated into various apps and games. It’s growing easier for children and young people to come across opportunities to gamble online, putting parents at greater risk of financial loss or mental and emotional strain.

That said, there are steps you can take to keep these youngsters as safe as possible from the impacts of gambling, and the guide below details these for you. At the same time, an expert points out the most significant risks posed to under-18s, to help you keep these damaging pitfalls to a minimum.

Catholic Cup Football Tournament

Congratulations to our football team who took part in the annual Catholic Cup tournament organised by All Saints Catholic High School at the ‘Goals Centre’!

The tournament involved teams from all of the Sheffield Catholic primary schools and was very competitive. Our team played well and performed with more confidence in each game. We were unfortunate in some of the games - but that’s football!

Well done to all our players, who should be very proud of themselves for the way they played; worked together; and did our school proud!

Coming Soon ....................

There is so much happening at St Joseph's every week, make a note of these dates so you don't miss out!

Thurs 4th July - Festival of Art

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are excited to invite you along to our “Festival of Arts Day”. The children have been working hard this term exploring, skill building and creating art for their topic work. They have worked so hard and produced such fabulous creations that we would like to invite you along to have a look!

The “Festival of Arts” will be on Thursday 4th July.

There will be year group slots timetabled throughout the day.

You can choose which slot you come to. We will be timetabling the children in school to also look around the Art Show so if you would like to see you child or children, you can see on our timetable at which point they will also be in the hall. For those with siblings in school so you are welcome to come to more than one slot, or another family member is also welcome to come at a different time.

Timetable for the day:

Reception:  9:00-9.40

Y1: 9.45-10.20

Y2: 10.45- 11.20

Y3 and Y4: 1:30-2:10

Y5 and Y6: 2:15 – 2:55

Please let us know you are coming and sign up using The School Gateway telling us who is coming in the comments section - . Please remember it is two adults per child. It will be lovely to have some parents join us back in school. On arrival look for the signs for the “Festival of Arts” and follow them.

Many thanks

God our Father, today we remember the courageous Saints

Peter and Paul.

Through your Holy Spirit you encouraged them to go out and share your love with the world.

Encourage us by the same Spirit,

so that we might be brave enough to share your love too.

We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
