Friday 5th May 2023

In the Catholic Church, May is a month traditionally dedicated to Our Lady and we dedicate our prayers to Mary. This year we have introduced saying the Angelus prayer at lunchtime as well as including the Hail Mary in our prayers throughout the day.

On Friday 19th May we will have a special day dedicated to Mary. We would like the children to wear a blue top/t-shirt or jumper and also bring in a few flowers to present to Mary. Hopefully the weather will be fine, and we shall then be able to make a special altar to Our Lady in the school grounds. During the afternoon we will have an assembly led by our Liturgy Leaders to honour Mary in this special month.

Our Parish Catechist, Mrs George, has been helping to prepare some of our Year 3 and Year 5 children for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. This is a major part in the life of a Catholic. Please remember the children and their families as they take this next step on their journey of faith.

Each year students and staff from Sheffield Girls’ welcome primary school students from schools across Sheffield to take part in SHINE, which aims to help pupils build confidence, develop new skills and most importantly, provide an opportunity to have fun with new friends on a Saturday morning.

This year a group of children from Year 5 attended this ten week programme and enjoyed sessions including drama, creative computing, music, science, dinosaurs and trampolining. They all showed real commitment - and made sure they were up early every Saturday morning to attend.

Ezekiel, David, Anastasia and Lilly Mae completed the programme and on Saturday were awarded a trophy and certificate (and goody bag !)

Today, we have been celebrating ‘British Values Day’ to commemorate the coronation.  The children came to school dressed in red, white and blue as part of our celebrations.

Throughout the day the children have taken part in different activities all based around the coronation and what it means to be British.  We had a bun sale and Y5 sold their enterprise products.  Y5 have been working hard to create products to sell having taken part in the ‘Make £5 Grow’ scheme.  Each Y5 child has borrowed £5 from the bank, with which they have bought resources to make products to sell.  These products will range in price from 80p to £3.

As part of our celebrations for the first coronation in over 70 years we have added some new books to our library. From The Boy Who Would be King by Michael Morpurgo to The Kings Pants by Nicholas Allen and including The Old Man of Lochnagar written by The King himself there’s something in this collection for everyone

St Joseph's Learning Behaviours

Congratulations to the children awarded their Self Manager certificate for their learning behaviour this week.

REC - Gabriel for always trying his best with any challenges and always thinking carefully and looking for a solution to solve a problem!

Y1 - Kamsi who follows instructions and listens well so that she is able to self-manage her learning

Y2 - William for making sure he's checking his own work for all of his success criteria, and making sure he learns steps and strategies that will help in maths.

Y3 - Ann-Treasa due to her being consistently proactive in keeping organised and pushing herself to new heights in her work

Y4 – Jessica struggled to grasp a certain maths concept, but she went home and diligently worked on her own, and now she has a great understanding of it!

Y5 – Sophie is always very organised and has managed herself well since having a pot on her ankle. She has started her own group being responsible for the displays in the classroom while she has had to stay inside at playtimes.

Y6 - Amelia is growing in independence, always ready to learn, tries hard at school and home, knows what she needs to do to make progress and has a positive attitude and good behaviour so that she makes the most of all her learning opportunities.

Whilst at our School our children are offered a broad and balanced curriculum, however we also prioritise creating a positive culture whereby the necessary personal attributes of a successful learner are openly discussed, reinforced and celebrated so as to foster and imbed these. In doing so we seek to develop our pupils as lifelong learners. Our learning behaviours support us to guide pupils in how successful learners approach new thinking, commit learning to memory, relate to others and communicate their ideas. Through this approach we seek to prepare our pupils for the next stages in their education and beyond.

This week our focus learning behaviour is Team Worker

A good Team Worker works well with others

They listen and take account of others views

Virtues to Live By

The Virtue to Live By for the next two weeks of this term is Perseverance and Resilience.

I will not Give up

I will have faith and hope even when things are difficult

In this weeks Gospel story, the disciples are feeling tired and dispirited because they had been fishing all night with no reward. The Holy Spirit gave them the strength to persevere in order to achieve their reward which was a net full of fish.

Reflection: Think of a time when you were fed up and it was difficult to carry on. How did you feel? What gave you the strength to keep going?

The disciples showed faith and perseverance and were rewarded. How can you show this in your every day life this week? In your work? Relationships? Faith?
