Friday 6th December

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT 1 DECEMBER 2024

Year 3 Advent Assembly

This week has been an extremely busy one, but has been a fantastic start to our Advent journey.

On Monday, Year 3, led our first Advent assembly in St Josephs Church. We were all completely blown away by their confidence and beautiful singing. As we were all so engrossed, we didn't take a photo at the time, so here we are sharing a photo taken from the Y3 class.

Our special thanks to Fr Mark, for allowing the school to use the church this year for our assemblies. This has meant that all our mums and dads and grandparents can join us during this special time.

We had a visit from CAFOD, who shared a special CAFOD Advent assembly with us all.  We had a whole school Universal Human Rights day. Our incredible choir visited a local care home to share some festive joy. Y6 visited All Saints to watch a performance of School of Rock and, of course, they then spent 3 days at their amazing Hollowford residential.

All in all, a wonderful week at St Josephs. I am sure next week will be just as exciting !

Year 6 Residential to Hollowford

Our Y6 children have had a wonderful three days at Hollowford in Castleton.

They have abseiled down bridges, taken part in caving, obstacle courses, zip ropes and high ropes, as well as an extremely long and challenging trek !

None of this fazed them, they have been absolute superstars and should feel very proud of themselves.

Human Rights Day and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Human Rights Day is observed annually around the world on 10 December. It commemorates the anniversary of one of the world's most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

The Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 and sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.

2024 Theme: Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now.

Human rights can empower individuals and communities to forge a better tomorrow. By embracing and trusting the full power of human rights as the path to the world we want, we can become more peaceful, equal and sustainable.

This Human Rights Day we focus on how human rights are a pathway to solutions, playing a critical role as a preventative, protective and transformative force for good. As UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said, “Human rights are the foundation for peaceful, just, and inclusive societies.”

This year’s theme is a call to acknowledge the importance and relevance of human rights in our everyday lives. We have an opportunity to change perceptions by speaking up against hate speech, correcting misinformation and countering disinformation. This is the time to mobilise action to reinvigorate a global movement for human rights.

We celebrated this special day today. We started our day with a whole school assembly all about Human Rights. We then considered these in our classes throughout the day and thought about what these rights actually mean to us.

This afternoon we had a lovely Advent assembly, with our visitors from Cafod, Sharon and Philoemena.

They told us all about the difference CAFOD makes to so many countries in the world. They also gave us some lovely stickers and prayer cards for the children to take home.

They were so impressed with our wonderful children and the responses that they shared. When the children were asked what their best ever gift had been …our incredible children shared love, friendship, family and time.... I was very proud of them all.

This year our liturgy leaders will be deciding on a suitable CAFOD gift for the school to donate. We shall be asking for donations of £1 per child for our annual Elf Day.

The children should all be coming home today with a CAFOD prayer card that was kindly given to them by the visitors.
