Friday 13th September

International Day of Democracy is celebrated annually on the 15th of September. It's a chance to review the state of democracy around the world, encourage democratic movements and promote freedom, peace and human rights.

This day celebrates the values of democracy as a way for everyone to participate in public discussions about what is important to them. We marked this special event today with Mrs Jordan delivering a whole school assembly.

Then every class spent the day exploring democracy, both in terms of the UK and the rest of the world. The children shared their thoughts with their classmates, knowing that their voices and opinions were valuable and respected. We are sure we have some incredible decision-makers and leaders of the future in our school!

Eat Smart Sheffield on X: "Ending the week on a high with another @SAfoodforlife awarded school! Huge congratulations to @MeynellSchool who have become the latest #Sheffield school to achieve their Food for

At the end of the summer term, we were very proud to be awarded our Food For Life (Bronze) Award, which means that the food we serve has been rigorously assessed to ensure it’s high quality, healthy and sustainable.

As a Food for Life Bronze school we:

  • Have committed to improve our school food culture by developing a school food policy.
  • Meet Bronze Food for Life Served Here Award standards, which shows that school food is healthy and uses seasonal ingredients that are at least 75% freshly prepared.
  • Involve pupils and parents in planning improvements to school menus and the lunchtime experience, boosting school meal take-up.
  • Give every pupil the opportunity to visit a local farm, and take part in cooking and food growing activities.

We want to continue to build on this achievement and make sure that all aspects of food and drink in school are as healthy as possible. Please remember that we have a "Water Only Policy." Children are not allowed to bring in pop or juice. They should each bring in a clean bottle of water on a daily basis. Your child is encouraged to drink this water throughout the day. The only exception to this is milk, which can be purchased online via the school system.

Snack Time -

Children in Reception, Y1 and Y2 are all provided with a piece of fruit to eat at snack time. Children in Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6 may bring in a healthy snack to eat at break time. This could be a piece of fruit, a healthy biscuit or crackers. Crisps, chocolates and sweets are not allowed. We have already had to speak to some of the children to remind them of this.

Please note, nuts of any kind are not to be brought into school as we have a number of children who have severe nut allergies.

As you know, St Josephs works very closely with Sheffield University and the MAKER team.  The Maker{School} programme provides opportunities for children and teachers to develop their skills, knowledge and mindsets for future success - inspiring creators, innovators and problem solvers through a maker's education.

This week we had our first MAKER assembly and reviewed our St Joseph's MAKER spirit.

What is the Maker{Spirit}? We believe that everyone can develop a way of being that helps to see the world as full of possibilities.

Next week our wonderful Y6 House Captains will start to explore each spirit, sharing them with all the children in whole school assemblies.

The children look extremely smart in their uniforms. Should you have any queries in terms of uniform expectations, then this information can all be found on the school website or, alternatively, you can call the school office.

Here we have two extremely smart Y6's who always look immaculate in their uniform. Emanualla and Isaac are our new Head Students, and we know that they are going to be wonderful in this role.

Pease note, It has been brought to our attention that a number of children are coming to school wearing jewellery. Children may only wear small stud earrings, (which they must be able to remove for PE), and a watch.

Bracelets, necklaces and hoop earrings are not allowed. Make-up and nail varnish is also not allowed to be worn in school.

One of the most valuable skills a child can carry into adulthood is conflict resolution. From simple playground spats to much more serious fights, handling these disagreements in a mature, constructive way can sometimes be uncomfortable and can also prove rather tricky. This is especially important to remember when it comes to children who could be experiencing this kind of situation for the very first time.

Bringing effective, reasonable solutions to disputes is a difficult talent to learn and an even harder one to master.

Help us to trust in you and follow your paths.

Amen
