Welcome Back

A new school year

Welcome back to a brand-new school year, which I am sure will be an exciting one.

The children have all settled back into their brand-new classes and are enjoying finding out about all the things they will be learning this year.

This year we have so many wonderful things planned. The children during the next two weeks will spend time exploring our city and its history. Please talk to the children about this and share any knowledge with them, so they can then share this information in their classes.

As you know, this year marks our 150th anniversary and there will be many special events throughout the year to mark this milestone.

The staff spent two very busy training days planning different programmes and initiatives. MAKER will continue to be a focus this year throughout our school. We also began training with DECSY in Philosophy 4 Children. This is something we have done previously but felt that this was an excellent time to refresh and retrain. P4C (Philosophy 4 Children) will further develop critical and creative thinking in school. It will also develop oracy skills amongst our children.

This term we say welcome to three brand-new members of staff : Mrs Jordan our Assistant Head, Mr White our Y5 teacher and Mrs Brookes our Y1 TA. I am sure that you will all join us in welcoming them to our St Joseph's family.

Here are just a few of our "back to school" moments ....

On Monday, all the staff spent the day with Dr Buxton and the MAKER team at the Wave Building (Sheffield University.) It was a fantastic way to start our year and remind ourselves of the impact that MAKER has had on our school already. We planned lots of exciting projects for this new year which we know the children will love. We also know that this initiative will continue to develop and benefit them, giving them the skills and competencies that they will need in the future.

Pope Francis’ prayer intention for the month of September is for the cry of the Earth.

“If we took the planet’s temperature, it would tell us that the Earth has a fever. And it is sick, just like anyone who’s sick,” he said.

The Holy Father asked individuals to consider two questions: “Are we listening to this pain? Do we hear the pain of the millions of victims of environmental catastrophes?”

“The ones suffering most from the consequences of these disasters are the poor, those who are forced to leave their homes because of floods, heat waves, or drought,” the pope said.

“Dealing with the environmental crisis caused by humans, such as climate change, pollution, or the loss of biodiversity, begs responses that are not only ecological but are also social, economic, and political.”

The pope emphasised the need to “commit ourselves to the fight against poverty and the protection of nature, changing our personal and community habits.”

Pope Francis concluded with a prayer: “Let us pray that each of us listen with our hearts to the cry of the Earth and of the victims of environmental disasters and climate change, making a personal commitment to care for the world we inhabit.”

USING AND REVIEWING PARENTAL CONTROLS

With most children today having their own phones, computers and other devices, it’s vitally important that parents  know how to keep young people protected while using them. Between targeted adverts, age-inappropriate content, and other online safety concerns, it can sometimes feel overwhelming to keep on top of.

Parental controls, present on most devices and several apps, can make this job significantly easier – but a certain amount of knowledge is required to use them effectively. This free online safety guide will provide you with the information you need to activate and maintain parental control on children and young people’s devices.

St Josephs UCM (Union of Catholic Mothers)

St Joseph's church would like to invite mums to join the UCM. This is a fantastic group which offers friendship, support and mutual encouragement …mothers helping mothers !

The next meeting of the UCM will be after the 10am Mass on Friday the 13th of September in the undercroft. All are welcome.

School Attendance | Sheffield City Council

This weekend we celebrate Education Sunday, an opportunity to reflect on and be thankful to all of our diocesan schools and academies, alongside all of Catholic Education across the country.

Our schools are blessed with many dedicated members of staff, but also many
committed governors who generously give of their time to help our schools provide the best. However, several schools struggle to recruit Foundation Governors to help them be of service to our Bishop.

If you feel that you could give some time to this role, or are interested
in finding out more, please contact the diocesan schools’ department at schools@hallam-diocese.com or on 0114 256 6440.
