Friday 22nd March 2024

On Sunday it is Palm Sunday when we remember how Jesus was welcomed into Jerusalem by crowds of people who waved palms and shouted “hosanna”. Jesus is in all of us, so every time we meet someone and welcome them, we are welcoming Jesus. We are asked by God to treat all people as we would like to be treated. The Bible also tells us that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. This is important. Jesus was showing the people a sign about the type of leader he was. Most leaders were seen on grand, powerful horses, to show the people who was boss. But Jesus chose to ride on a humble donkey.

Holy Week is the most important week of the year for Christians and begins on Palm Sunday. During Holy Week, we remember the days leading up to Jesus' death on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday. As Holy Week continues we remember other special events, like Holy Thursday, when Jesus ate the last supper with his disciples. During Holy Week, Jesus teaches us about humility, service, forgiveness, hope and love.

Stations of the Cross

Thankyou to Mrs George for spending time with each class to show them how to pray the Stations of the Cross.  The Stations of the Cross introduce children to Jesus’ Passion, breaking it down into stages that they can reflect upon and remember. For Reception and KS1 Mrs George encouraged the children to focus on each image and to think about what is happening to Jesus and how he might be feeling. For KS2, it was a moment of reflection for the children having the opportunity to explore the true meaning of Lent and the Easter season

All of our families our invited to our KS2 Easter Praise, that will be held in St Josephs Church on Wednesday the 27th of March at 2pm

Get up to speed

On Wednesday 20th March Year 6 visited this year’s Get up to Speed with STEM event at Magna Science Adventure Centre. This was a one-day showcase event which aims to introduce, inform and inspire students, parents and teachers about the world of work in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing (STEM) sectors.  The event links the curriculum to real life experiences and explores the diverse range of opportunities and pathways available in a stimulating, fun and interactive way.

Year 6 have had a wonderful day. There were so many things to see and do it was hard to decide where to start. We also met the Lord Mayor of Sheffield who spent some time explaining the different parts of his chain of office. We even met our lovely friends from the Maker {Futures} team.

Our house captains, Sophie and David, revisited the Collaborative Maker Spirit

This week we will be looking for pupils working well together in a group and ensuring that everyone participates.

We will be looking for children who help others without being asked to

We will be looking for children who listen and support each other

School attendance and absence

You must make sure your child gets a full-time education that meets their needs (for example if they have special educational needs). You can send your child to school or educate them yourself.

Children must get an education between the school term after their 5th birthday and the last Friday in June in the school year they turn 16.

You’ll be contacted by either:

  • the school - if your child is enrolled in school and does not turn up (even if they’re only absent for a day)
  • the council’s education welfare officer - if they think your child is not getting a suitable education at home

You can be prosecuted if you do not give your child an education. You’ll normally get warnings and offers of help from the local council first.

When your child can miss school

You can only allow your child to miss school if either:

  • they’re too ill to go in
  • you’ve got advance permission from the school

There’s extra support available if your child cannot go to school for long periods because of a health problem.

Holidays in term time

You have to get permission from the head teacher if you want to take your child out of school during term time.

You can only do this if:

  • you make an application to the head teacher in advance (as a parent the child normally lives with)
  • there are exceptional circumstances

It’s up to the head teacher how many days your child can be away from school if leave is granted.

You can be fined for taking your child on holiday during term time without the school’s permission.

Weekly Attendance - week beginning 18th March 2024

Our whole school attendance target for this academic year (23/24) is 96.5%

Sebastian has been investigating forces and pressure for British Science Week. Using a hairdryer, he has overcome the force of gravity with a stronger force of lift, making a golden egg float in the air.

He's also demonstrated how an aeroplane wing is aerodynamic and when fast air goes over the top of the wing it causes a lower pressure compared with the bottom of the wing and that gives an upward lift.

Our Safeguarding Team

Safeguarding at St Joseph's

  • If you have any concerns about a student at St Joseph's, please share this information with us straight away.
  • Issues such as appearance, hygiene, behaviour, can be shared with teaching or support staff.
  • Do not worry about reporting small matters – we would rather you tell us than miss a worrying situation.
  • If you think that a student or an adult who cares for them has been or might be harmed; please talk to a member of our trained safeguarding team immediately (details above).
  • You can ask any member of staff to find them and speak to you about a confidential and urgent matter.

We are an Operation Encompass School

Operation Encompass is a partnership between police and schools

Schools receive an Operation Encompass notification when a child is exposed to (or involved in) any domestic incident. Specially trained members of our Safeguarding Team are informed so that we can respond appropriately to support the safety and wellbeing of any children and family members affected.
