Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Sunday 26th November 2023

Sunday 26th November is the Feast of Christ the King which concludes the Church’s liturgical year. The Gospel reminds us that Jesus is the great King of the universe and hrough His Kingship, He unifies nations, heals His people, defeats the enemy and leads His people to join Him in glory. The year ends on a real high point and celebrates the Kingdom of God in all its richness before beginning the new Liturgical year with the reflective and penitential season of Advent.

As we raised £142 from donations at the Harvest Festival in October we decided to take the Liturgy Leaders shopping to use this money to shop to buy items that the Handsworth Foodbank have specifically asked for. Ten Liturgy Leaders walked with Mrs McFarlane and Mrs Harrand to Aldi and enjoyed selecting items such as tinned potatoes, rice, pasta and a few treats as well. We managed to fill a trolley and a small shopping basket.

Year 1 had a great time at forest school this week. They made a fire and drank hot chocolate, as a special treat. Well done year 1 for keeping safe and sensible!
We are forest warriors, keepers of the land.

Physical activity guidelines for children and young people

How much physical activity should children and young people aged 5 to 18 do to keep healthy?

Children and young people need to do 2 types of physical activity each week:

  • aerobic exercise
  • exercises to strengthen their muscles and bones

Children and young people aged 5 to 18 should:

  • aim for an average of at least 60 minutes of moderate or vigorous intensity physical activity a day across the week
  • take part in a variety of types and intensities of physical activity across the week to develop movement skills, muscles and bones
  • reduce the time spent sitting or lying down and break up long periods of not moving with some activity. Aim to spread activity throughout the day

What counts as moderate activity?

Moderate intensity activities will raise your heart rate, and make you breathe faster and feel warmer.

One way to tell if you're working at a moderate intensity level is if you can still talk, but not sing.

Children and young people should do a range of different activities across the week.

Examples include:

  • walking to school or walking the dog
  • playground activities, including jumping, running and catching
  • physical education
  • sports, like football or tennis
  • swimming
  • skipping
  • dancing
  • skateboarding or rollerblading
  • cycling

What activities strengthen muscles and bones?

Examples include:

  • gymnastics
  • football
  • jumping
  • martial arts
  • sit-ups, press-ups and other similar exercises (for young people)
  • resistance exercises with exercise bands, weight machines or handheld weights (for young people)

Exercising safely

Children and young people should:

  • get medical advice about exercising if they have a health condition
  • do exercise that is suitable for their age, ability and experience
  • start any new exercise slowly and increase it bit by bit
  • use protective equipment, for example for cycling and skateboarding

Young people can use weights for resistance exercise if a qualified adult trains them to use weights correctly and supervises them.

Annual Advent Wreath Blessing Liturgy 2023

To begin the important season of Advent Fr Mark will lead a special Advent liturgy on Friday 1st December . During the liturgy, Fr Mark will bless our class Advent wreaths and our travelling cribs.

This Advent, our travelling cribs will be available for children to take home and share with their families. Inside includes a leaflet about celebrating Advent, a copy of the Nativity story, a model Nativity scene to set up in your own home and a class book so something can be added about your experience of Advent.

Playground Praise

On Saturday 18th November it was our open day. This was an opportunity for prospective parents to visit and have a look around school, meet members of staff and the leadership team. Our school prefects and sports leaders were on hand to show families around and answer any questions they may have about our school.

This is some of the feedback from the families that attended:

What did you find most interesting / helpful / enjoyable during your visit?

“Pupils were very good, spoke highly of the school and gave lots of information about the school.”

“We loved that the children did our tour – they were so helpful and informative, shining examples of how we all want our children to grow up.”

“It is clear that the leadership and teaching staff echoed the same culture and values throughout the classes.

“We love your school and the culture that you have created – Excellent open day “

Jesus,

You are the King of the Universe.

We praise you for bringing us together in your name.

Bring Your healing to our world.

Help me to follow your example in our words and actions today.

Amen
