Reception

Welcome to Reception

Our team in Reception are Miss Keenan, Mrs Abel and Mrs Hirst.

FS2 Curriculum Overview

Communication, language and Literacy
We are going to read and retell our focus texts for this half-term. These texts are linked to our overarching theme of growing and looking after ourselves. We are going to be learning and using new vocabulary throughout the day linked to these stories.

Literacy - Reading and Writing
In Read Write Inc we will consolidate our learning of our set 1 single set sounds and learn our special friends (sh, ch, th, ng, nk) and additional special friends (ff, ll, ck). We are going to be using our Fred fingers to spell words using our known phonics sounds and begin to write short phrases and sentences.

Literacy - Comprehension
We will be listening and retelling our class focus texts. We will be comparing the texts and talking about what our favourite stories are and why. We will be learning about the characters and the main events of a story to help us with our helicopter stories.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development
We are going to be learning about how to look after our bodies by brushing our teeth, exercising and learning about eating healthy. In P4C we are going to use the book ‘Would you rather’ by John Burningham to share our ideas and opinions with our friends.

RE
In RE our topics are gathering and growing. We will be recognising how and why people gather together and the joy of spending time together as a school family and in church. We will be learning about Lent and how we can grow in our love during Lent.

Physical Development
In PE, we are going to be going on a space and jungle adventure. We are going to be developing our jumping, skipping, hopping and balance skills. We are going to practise our partner work, turn-taking and sharing. We will continue to develop our fine and gross motor skills over the half-term throughout our indoor and outdoor continuous provision. We will practice our letter formation in our daily phonics sessions using the Read Write Inc letter formation rhymes.

Maths
In maths our topics are grouping and sharing, numbers patterns within 15 and doubling and halving. We will also be consolidating our knowledge of number bonds within 5 and 10 during our maths meetings and practising our quick recall facts of one more and one fewer up to 10.

Understanding the World
This half-term, will be exploring all about spring and growing. We will be observing seasonal changes from winter to spring and talk about how we change as we grow. We are going to compare and discuss how we have changed since we were a baby, using photos from in the past and in the present, and learn about the life-cycle of butterflies. In science week we are going to be enjoying lots of different science experiments, whilst developing our skills in observing, predicting and explaining.
